Bhola's Story:
Bhola was blind, emaciated and in terrible pain - yet his owners walked him for long hours on hot tar roads to beg money from tourists and perform at wedding functions to make a quick buck. Last month blind Bhola had a tragic accident when he was hit by a truck on a dark street! The color of his skin being dark grey, resembling the dark foggy night, didn't help!
Wildlife SOS use
d a crane and with the help of the Police lifted Bhola and helped him stand up. Bhola had suffered extensive injuries to his trunk, feet, and a major wound on his spine. At first it looked like Bhola would never walk again and he would be paralysed for life, but the gentle giant had a strong will to live and with a lot of effort, patience and determination Bhola finally stood up on his own legs.
Wildlife SOS continued to provide Bhola veterinary care and monitored his health. Just when we thought Bhola was gradually healing from the TLC we were providing him each day - we were in for a shock! Bhola's greedy owners did not want to be feeding Bhola unless he was earning for them! This meant that they intended to make Bhola work immediately even before his wounds were completely healed.
Bhola's wounds were still badly infected and he was in agonizing pain, barely managing to stand on his legs. He looked like an elephant skeleton draped with skin - emaciated and weak. The careless indifference of the owners left us with no choice - Bhola just had to be rescued.
OPERATION BHOLA was launched and after three long days of negotiation, legal protocols, court appearances and paperwork our efforts paid off. With generous support from One Voice Association, France and HSI, Australia, Wildlife SOS finally managed to rescue Bhola. He was then safely transported to "Elephant Haven" where he would have other elephants for company.
A tired but relieved Bhola was received amidst much rejoicing by the Wildlife SOS and One Voice team at his new home. We hope to be able to provide him now with a happy life -- a life that should always have been his, a life that his human owners snatched away from him. Bhola's health is improving slowly and we need your help to keep giving him the valuable veterinary care and feeding that he needs to get better.
